YASHIN
PLUS: TANTRUM TO BLIND, WITH ONE LAST BREATH, JODY HAS A HITLIST
UNDERWORLD, LONDON 24.03.12
Words: Jenny Chu
In one year, Yashin have gone from supporting The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus merely selling out venues. And in two years have gone from not even closely filling 250 capacity bars to selling out tonight’s show at the Underworld, not a bad transition for 6 guys from Scotland!
Tantrum To Blind, a Swedish band formed of youths doing Busted jumps in 2012 but their front woman has notably a hell of a set of lungs on her despite their head turning style this is one band with a chick in you won’t be comparing to Paramore.
With One Last Breath bring a raid of catchy melodies and a touch of cliché breakdowns making it difficult to distinguish them to any other band in their genre but nonetheless they successfully pack the room and deliver a rampage of screams.
The sound of summer bounces off the stage; Jody Has A Hitlist not quite pop not quite punk are a ball of energy and their enthusiasm doesn’t leave a bitter taste but quite the opposite. They’re the epitome of fun and each song is as contagious as the next, making for a band that should be flying the flag for Ireland.
One by one, Glaswegian’s finest; Yashin take to the stage, this show might have sold out but it should have been a venue twice the size. There isn’t a band more deserving of being in the BBC rock chart; crowd pleaser and debut single New Year Or New York is living proof how talented, catchy and fresh this band actually are. Remember Me, Friends In High Places and Get Loose are all reminders that their songs will never get old. From the beautiful Stand Up where screamer/vocalist Kevin Miles plays the introduction on a keyboard shows how genuine this band is when others would have taken the easy route and played to a backing track. To a taste of their to be released second album, Run Away Train and Last One Standing is the sextet telling everyone they’re capable and most certainly ready to take over the world and show that rock is not dead for as long as their guitar solos get the crown and they never sacrifice their astounding performances. If there is one band you see live this year, make it Yashin.
